European Union (Referendum) Bill: Report stage

This Bill, sponsored by James Wharton, seeks to make provision for the holding of a referendum in the United Kingdom on the United Kingdom’s membership of the European Union.

The House of Commons Library produces briefing papers to inform MPs of key issues. The papers contain factual information and a range of opinions on each subject, and aim to be politically impartial. The Library has published a briefing paper for the Bill.

Extension of Franchise (House of Lords) Bill [HL]: Second reading

This Bill, sponsored by Stephen Pound, seeks to make provision for a Member of the House of Lords to vote at elections to the House of Commons.

The debate is rescheduled for Friday 29 November 2013.

EU Membership (Audit of Costs and Benefits) Bill: Second reading

This Bill, sponsored by Mr Christopher Chope, seeks to require an independent audit of the benefits and costs of UK membership of the European Union.

The debate is rescheduled for Friday 22 November 2013.

Coroners and Justice (Amendment) Bill: Second reading

This Bill, sponsored by Sir Paul Beresford, seeks to amend section 62 of the Coroners and Justice Act 2009 so as to apply additionally to the possession of pornographic written material about children; to make consequential amendments to the Act; and for connected purposes.

Asylum (Time Limit) Bill: Second reading

This Bill, sponsored by Mr Christopher Chope, seeks to require that asylum claims in the United Kingdom be lodged within three months of the claimant’s arrival in the United Kingdom; and that persons who have already entered the United Kingdom and wish to make an asylum claim must do so within three months of the passing of this Act.

The debate is rescheduled for Friday 22 November 2013.

Foreign Nationals (Access to Public Services) Bill: Second reading

This Bill, sponsored by Mr Christopher Chope, seeks to restrict access by foreign nationals to United Kingdom public services for which no charge is made.

House of Lords (Maximum Membership) Bill: Second reading

This Bill, sponsored by Mr Christopher Chope, seeks to provide for a maximum limit on the number of Peers entitled to vote in the House of Lords; and to provide for a moratorium on new appointments.

Apprenticeships and Skills (Public Procurement Contracts) Bill: Second reading (Day 2)

This Bill, sponsored by Andrew Gwynne, seeks to require certain public procurement contracts let by public authorities to include a commitment by the contractor to provide apprenticeships and skills training; and for connected purposes.

The debate is scheduled to resume on Friday 22 November 2013.

Private Members' Bills are Public Bills introduced by MPs and Lords who are not government ministers.

As with other Public Bills, their purpose is to change the law as it applies to the general population.

A minority of Private Members' Bills become law but, by creating publicity around an issue, they may affect legislation indirectly.
