Lords debates effective policing

Members of the Lords, including a former member of the Metropolitan Policing Authority and a former deputy assistant commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, debated public trust in the police and its role in effective policing, in the House of Lords on Thursday 28 November.
The debate centred on issues that have undermined public trust and confidence in the police. Several members spoke of the ongoing issue of disproportionate stopping and searching, and how this has affected relations between the police and black and ethnic minority groups. The reputational damage caused by high profile cases of organisational failure and malpractice was also raised.
Members emphasised the importance of a police force that reflects the community it serves and urged that more be done to tackle the problem of recruitment. The question of the independence, transparency and accountability of the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPPC) was also considered.
