MPs debated the second reading of the House of Lords Reform (No.2) Bill, one of the Private Members' Bills scheduled for debate in the House of Commons on Friday 18 October 2013.

House of Lords Reform (No. 2) Bill: Second Reading

This Bill, sponsored by Dan Byles MP, seeks to make provision for retirement from the House of Lords; and to make provision for the expulsion of Members of the House of Lords in specified circumstances.

This Bill has now been committed to a Public Bill Committee. Details for when the Committee are scheduled to meet are yet to be announced.

Drug Driving (Assessment of Drug Misuse) Bill: Second Reading

This Bill, sponsored by Graham Evans MP, seeks to provide for the assessment of drug dependency or propensity for drug misuse of persons who, in the course of investigations for certain driving offences, have provided blood or urine samples that reveal the presence of certain drugs; and for connected purposes.

Debate on this Bill was interrupted by the adjournment of proceedings. The debate is scheduled to be resumed on Friday 25 October 2014.

Property Blight Compensation Bill: Second Reading

This Bill, sponsored by Mrs Caroline Spelman MP, seeks to require the Secretary of State to amend legislation to improve the system of compensation for property blight caused by major national infrastructure projects; and for connected purposes.

Second reading of the Bill has been rescheduled for Friday 25 October 2013.

Asylum (Time Limit) Bill: Second Reading

This Bill, sponsored by Mr Christopher Chope MP, seeks to require that asylum claims in the United Kingdom be lodged within three months of the claimant’s arrival in the United Kingdom; and that persons who have already entered the United Kingdom and wish to make an asylum claim must do so within three months of the passing of this Act.

Second reading of the Bill has been rescheduled for Friday 1 November 2013.

Foreign Nationals (Access to Public Services) Bill: Second Reading

This Bill, sponsored by Mr Christopher Chope MP, seeks to restrict access by foreign nationals to United Kingdom public services for which no charge is made.

Second reading of the Bill has been rescheduled for Friday 1 November 2013.

Railways Bill: Second Reading

This Bill, sponsored by Caroline Lucas MP, seeks to require the Secretary of State to assume control of passenger rail franchises when they come up for renewal; and for connected purposes.

Second reading of the Bill has been rescheduled for Friday 28 February 2014.

Medical Innovation (No. 2) Bill: Second Reading

This Bill, sponsored by Michael Ellis MP, seeks to make provision about innovation in medical treatment.

Second reading of the Bill has been rescheduled for Friday 22 November 2013.

Sexual Impropriety in Employment Bill: Second Reading

This Bill, sponsored by Mr Christopher Chope MP, seeks to require that claims by employees alleging sexual impropriety be limited to cases where the alleged misconduct is contrary to the criminal law and has been reported to the police.

Second reading of the Bill has been rescheduled for Friday 1 November 2013.

House of Lords (Maximum Membership) Bill: Second Reading

This Bill, sponsored by Mr Christopher Chope MP, seeks to provide for a maximum limit on the number of Peers entitled to vote in the House of Lords; and to provide for a moratorium on new appointments.

Second reading of the Bill has been rescheduled for Friday 1 November 2013.

EU Membership (Audit of Costs and Benefits) Bill: Second Reading

This Bill, sponsored by Mr Christopher Chope MP, seeks to require an independent audit of the benefits and costs of UK membership of the European Union.

Second reading of the Bill has been rescheduled for Friday 8 November 2013.

Coroners and Justice (Amendment) Bill: Second Reading

This Bill, sponsored by Sir Paul Beresford MP, seeks to amend section 62 of the Coroners and Justice Act 2009 so as to apply additionally to the possession of pornographic written material about children; to make consequential amendments to the Act; and for connected purposes.

Second reading of the Bill has been rescheduled for Friday 25 October 2013.

Private Members' Bills

Private Members' Bills are Public Bills introduced by MPs and Lords who are not government ministers.

As with other Public Bills, their purpose is to change the law as it applies to the general population.
 
A minority of Private Members' Bills become law but, by creating publicity around an issue, they may affect legislation indirectly.
