Lord Speaker visits Bradford

The Lord Speaker, Baroness D'Souza, spoke at two events in Bradford on Friday 15 November.
The visit was part of an ongoing outreach programme designed to increase public awareness of, and engagement with, the House of Lords. It also formed part of Parliament Week 2013.
Women in Politics: Yes we can!
Baroness D’Souza delivered an opening speech at a 'Women in Parliament' event at City Training Services, which coincided with the main theme of this year’s Parliament Week, ‘Women in Democracy’. She talked to the audience about her work as Lord Speaker, her career outside of Parliament and the general need for women and girls to get involved in politics.
Other speakers included:
- Baroness Grey-Thompson, Paralympian and Crossbench peer
- Ann Cryer, former MP for Keighley.
Get Involved: Parliament and sport
Baroness D’Souza spoke about the work of the House of Lords and discussed how people with a passion for sport can work effectively with Parliament.
The event was held in partnership with One in a Million, a Bradford-based charity that works with Bradford City Football Club to help children and young people, many of whom are from disadvantaged backgrounds. It provides education in and out of school through sports, arts and enterprise programmes.
BBC sports reporter Tanya Arnold chaired the event. Other speakers included:

- Wayne Jacobs, One in a Million founder and former Bradford City FC defender.
Speaking ahead of her visit, the Lord Speaker said: 'With the theme of this year’s Parliament Week being ‘Women in Democracy’, I am delighted to be in Yorkshire to talk about the work of the House, my role and ways in which everyone can engage with the democratic process.'
