Members of the Lords, including university chancellors, vice chancellors and academics, debated higher education in the UK on Wednesday 9 April.

The debate focused on ways to strengthen the UK's higher education sector, highlighting its significant economic impact. It also covered some of the challenges currently facing universities. The issues discussed included:

  • university funding
  • social mobility and widening access
  • diversity in the university system and in its leaders
  • part-time students
  • teacher training
  • student loans
  • STEM subjects
  • research and development.
