Members of the Lords, including the director of the International Aids Vaccine Initiative and a council member of the European Parliamentarians for Africa, debated government action to support the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, on Thursday 11 December.

Lords discussed the three diseases the Global Fund was formed to fight: AIDS, Tuberculosis (TB) and Malaria, and also Ebola. Peers highlighted the impact these diseases are having, particularly in Africa, and the progress being made in the fight against them, including the use of antiretroviral therapy for AIDS.

Members focused on areas where they felt more could be done, including the development of vaccines, risk reduction programmes for sex workers and drug substitution therapy.
