Members of the Lords, including several former councillors and a former chair of the Local Government Association, debated the case for enabling economic leadership in cities on Thursday 11 December.

The debate centred on how growth can be accelerated in UK cities, with many members making the case for greater investment in underperforming cities and further devolved powers. Peers also emphasised the importance of cooperation and collaboration - working to strengthen the link between rural areas and inner cities, rather than creating city-states.

Responding for the government, Baroness Williams of Trafford (Conservative), reiterated the coalition's commitment to building up the trust between central and local government, and its desire for decentralisation over state intervention.
