Members of the Lords, including a former UK ambassador to the United Nations and a former director of Oxfam, debated the case for establishing new global development goals in 2015 on Thursday 11 December.

Last week the United Nations Secretary General issued 'The Road to Dignity by 2030' report to frame the start of the international community's dialogue on the new development goals. Intergovernmental consultations will run from January to July 2015 and in September nation states will seek to agree, through the UN, a new set of sustainable development goals to take to 2030.

Members highlighted the issues they thought should be the focus for the post-2015 framework, including tackling extreme poverty. Some set out the six essential elements that member states should strive towards: dignity, people, prosperity, planet, justice and partnership and members' arguments focussed on these subjects.

Baroness Northover (Liberal Democrat), government spokesperson for the Department for International Development (DfID), responded on behalf of the government setting out the UK's active role in the process and highlighting the prime minister's input. She said the UK was committed to achieving meaningful goals and a workable framework in September 2015.
