Peers discussed the impact of inequality on social mobility in the UK, in the Lords on Thursday 6 February.

The debate was sparked by growing levels of income inequality in the UK, and considered some of the political and social problems generated as a result. Among the issues raised was poverty of aspiration, with several peers calling for changes in the education system and training for adult life to help children develop the skills to succeed in a fast-changing labour market. Apprenticeships and a renewed focus on vocational qualifications were identified as a potential solution, as well as increased emphasis on the services of youth organisations and community groups.

This was a question for short debate (QSD), limited to one hour, which took place in Grand Committee. Through QSDs members are able to discuss current issues and draw the government's attention to concerns.
