Peers discuss efforts to combat tropical diseases

On Thursday 7 February, members of the Lords asked the government about progress made in combating neglected tropical diseases since the 2012 London Declaration. They also asked how the issue will feature in the post-2015 Millennium Development Goals health agenda.
Peers discussed the impact of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), outlining their effect on the world’s poorest people. They spoke of ways to combat these diseases, including drug administration, water and sanitation projects. They also looked at research into new vaccines, diagnostics, insecticides and medicines that can help fight NTDs.
Members also spoke about the London declaration of 2012, which united a range of groups in an effort to coordinate the fight against these diseases. However, they highlighted lack of investment and technical support, and the threat of conflict in poorer countries as threats to the progress that has been made.
