Peers debate economy and climate

Members of the Lords, including the former chair of the Metropolitan Police Authority and a trustee of the 2020 Public Services Trust, debated the resilience of the UK in the face of economic and climatic challenges, and pressures on public services, on Thursday 23 January.
Members discussed the threat of hazards and natural accidents to the UK, focusing on the government’s National Risk Register of Civil Emergencies. They discussed the resilience of society to issues such as power failure, animal disease, extreme weather, increased strain on the NHS and the demand for affordable housing. They also spoke about the challenges to the voluntary sector in the UK, and the contribution of charities in providing help to vulnerable people.
Peers also asked how the government could embrace change and innovation to increase the UK’s resilience, giving the example of increased communication possibilities through the use of technology.
