Members of the Lords, including the chairman of PayPal Europe, the chair of Go-On UK, and the executive director of Telegraph Media Group Ltd debated the World Wide Web and its effects on society in the UK, on Thursday 16 January.

Lords looked back at the history of the web, and how technology has transformed the way we interact and work with each other. The impact of the internet on the UK economy was highlighted, and the work the government has been doing to embrace technology and the web was discussed, including the establishment of the Government Digital Service (GDS).

Peers also looked at the challenges facing the UK, including a lack of online skills amongst the population, the rising number of technology jobs that need to be filled and the low number of women in the UK technology sector. They also raised concerns over rural internet coverage, and the challenges technology poses to intellectual property (IP) rights, including whether laws around IP are sufficiently up-to-date.
