Lords debates Syrian refugees
10 January 2014
Members of the Lords debated what action the government will take in conjunction with other European Union member states to establish a European-wide evacuation and resettlement programme for those fleeing conflict in Syria, on Thursday 9 January
Peers discussed the humanitarian crisis in Syria, and whether the UK government should allow extra space for Syrian refugees, which are now estimated to total 2.3 million people. They discussed the establishment of a global or continent-based resettlement programme, and how refugees could be located together with other members of their community for mutual support. Lords also considered the ongoing conflict in Syria and ways in which the government could help pursue a peace settlement.
