Lords debates freedom of belief

Members of the Lords, including a member of the Joint Committee on Human Rights and a former Chief Rabbi, debated international compliance with Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights concerning freedom of belief, on Thursday 24 July.

This was a balloted debate, which usually take place on a Thursday in the Lords chamber. During debates, Lords are able to put their experience to good use, checking and challenging the government.

The debate was requested by Lord Alton of Liverpool (Crossbench). Other speakers included:

  • Baroness Berridge (Conservative), member of the Joint Committee on Human Rights
  • Lord Morrow (Democratic Unionist), member of the Northern Ireland Assembly
  • Lord Parekh (Labour), former member of the Joint Committee on Human Rights 
  • Lord Sacks (Crossbench), former Chief Rabbi.

Cabinet Office spokesperson, Lord Wallace of Saltaire (Liberal Democrat), responded on behalf of the government.
