Members of the Lords, including the chairs of English Heritage and the Association of Leading Visitor Attractions were among peers debating how the tourism and hospitality industries contribute to the economy both in the UK and across Europe, on Thursday 12 June.

Lords focused on some of the perceived misconceptions around the tourist industry, challenging views that it is a low-skill industry. They also spoke about the links between arts and culture and tourism, and ways in which these could be strengthened, including the suggestions that the Depatment of Culture, Media and Sport include Tourism in its name as well.

Peers also discussed the possibility of introducing a tourism and hospitality industry bill, and considered what this could contain, including a reduction in VAT on accommodation, restaurant meals and admissions. They also highlighted concerns around the availability of UK passports, and the cost of UK visas.
