Lords debates care sector
26 November 2014
Members of the Lords, including a former chair of the Royal Free Hospital and a former chief executive of the NHS confederation, debated working conditions in the care sector, on Tuesday 25 November.
Members of the Lords looked at training, pay and regulation in the care sector. Peers outlined the tasks expected of care workers, including the administration of medication and the provision of emotional and domestic support. Members expressed concern about the low pay and lack of regulation in the sector, highlighting the fact there is no register of care workers in the UK.
Peers also asked how more young people could be encouraged to work in the sector, and how working conditions could be improved in order to allow workers to deliver quality care.
