Members of the Lords, including a film director, former Culture Secretary and a former headmistress, debated the case for arts education on Thursday 27 November.

The debate focused on the importance of arts education within a broad-based curriculum. Peers stressed that more needs to be done - initiatives, partnerships and programmes - to reinforce the position of the arts in the national curriculum today.

Peers warned of the dangers of inequalities in current provision, with several drawing on their own professional experiences, and how the arts education they received was crucial to their own career development. Members also emphasised the importance of the arts to the UK economy and the need for government to continue to support the development of the skills needed for the industry to continue to thrive.
