Members of the Lords, including a chair of the Consumer Codes Approval Board and the vice president of the Trading Standards Institute, debated the cumulative effects of the government’s economic, public spending and regulatory policies on low income and vulnerable consumers, on Thursday 6 November.

Peers considered a range of subjects, including employment rates, zero hour contracts and energy prices. They looked at public transport, and asked whether there needs to be more regulation around fares. Housing also came under the spotlight, particularly the supply of affordable housing and pressures on the private rented sector.

Other subjects covered included payday lending, food banks and ways to encourage economic growth.
