MPs debate top rate of income tax and local bus services

MPs took part in a debate on the top rate of income tax, in the first of two debates on Wednesday 5 November 2014 on subjects chosen by the Opposition. The second debate was on the subject of local bus services.

The debate was opened by Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Chris Leslie. The Financial Secretary to the Treasury, David Gauke, responded on behalf of the Government.

The second of today's Opposition Day debates was opened by the Shadow Secretary of State for Transport, Mary Creagh. The Secretary of State for Transport, Patrick McLoughlin, responded on behalf of the Government.

About Opposition day debates

Opposition days are days allocated in the House of Commons in each session for the discussion of subjects chosen by the Opposition. Seventeen days are at the disposal of the Leader of the Opposition, the leader of the largest opposition party, to decide which matters are debated. Three days are usually divided between the other opposition parties.

The Opposition generally use them to raise questions of policy and administration. Frequently, two separate subjects are debated on an opposition day.
