MPs debate the economy and government policies on Wales

MPs took part in a debate on the performance of the economy in the first of two debates on Wednesday 26 November 2014 on subjects chosen by the Opposition. The second debate was on the effect of Government policies on Wales.

Debate on performance of the economy

The debate was opened by the Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Chris Leslie. The Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury, Priti Patel, responded on behalf of the Government.

The second Opposition day debate was opened by the Shadow Secretary of State for Wales, Owen Smith. The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Wales, Alun Cairns, responded on behalf of the Government.

About Opposition day debates

Opposition days are days allocated in the House of Commons in each session for the discussion of subjects chosen by the Opposition.

Seventeen days are at the disposal of the Leader of the Opposition, the leader of the largest opposition party, to decide which matters are debated. Three days are usually divided between the other opposition parties.

The Opposition generally use them to raise questions of policy and administration. Frequently, two separate subjects are debated on an opposition day.
