The lecture was followed by a Q&A on the work of the Gates Foundation and the impact of UK aid. The questions came from the audience and via Twitter – using #askBillG.

'A stellar beginning'

Commenting ahead of the lecture, Baroness D’Souza, said: 'I am delighted that Bill Gates will be speaking to us in the House of Lords about the important work he and his wife’s foundation is doing across Africa and globally. I know from my own experience of living and working in the developing world, the important role aid can play and the difference it can make to the world’s poorest people.

'This is the first of a series of occasional lectures I will host and it will be a stellar beginning.'
