Members of the Lords, including a former deputy general secretary of the Transport and General Workers Union and the president of the Specialist Engineering Contractors Group, debated the contribution of the construction industry to the UK economy, on Thursday 23 October.

Lords discussed a number of key areas, including housing, rail and road links and the generation of energy. They considered the challenges the construction industry currently faces, including competition between firms and lack of skills in the labour force.

Peers raised several questions, asking whether local communities should be given the power to build homes, and how the government could increase levels of affordable housing. They also looked at new technologies that can be used in the construction of cities.
