The Prime Minister, David Cameron, made a statement in the House of Commons on Monday 1 September 2014 on the EU Council, security and the Middle East. Labour Leader, Edward Miliband, responded to the statement on behalf of the Opposition.

Meeting of the European Council - August 2014

At the meeting of EU leaders on 30 August, a new President of the European Council and a new EU High Representative were appointed. EU leaders also discussed the economy and the situation in Ukraine, Gaza and Iraq.

On Friday 29 August, the Government announced that the Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre has changed the UK's threat level from international terrorism from substantial to severe, in response to developments in Iraq and Syria.
