Lords debates Commonwealth

Members of the House of Lords, including the deputy chair of the British Council and a former high commissioner to Australia, debated the outcome of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Malta on Thursday 17 December.
This was a balloted debate. They usually take place on a Thursday in the Lords chamber. During debates, members are able to put their experience to good use, discussing current issues and drawing the government's attention to concerns.
The debate was proposed by Lord Luce (Crossbench), former foreign office minister and former governor of Gibraltar. Speakers included:
- Lord Judd (Labour), member of the London School of Economics Commission on Diplomacy
- Baroness Prashar (Crossbench), deputy chair of the British Council
- Lord Watson of Richmond (Liberal Democrat), former chairman of the Council of Commonwealth Societies
Baroness Featherstone (Liberal Democrat), former parliamentary under secretary of state for international development, made her maiden speech.
Foreign Office minister Baroness Anelay of St Johns (Conservative) responded on behalf of the government.
