22 December 2015 (updated on 22 December 2015)
The Queen has been pleased to approve Mr Speaker’s recommendation that Mohammed Amal (Kamal) El-Hajji be appointed Serjeant at Arms in succession to Lawrence Ward, whose last day of service was on 20 September 2015. Kamal will take over from Bob Twigger, who has been acting Serjeant at Arms in the interim period.
The appointment of Kamal El-Hajji follows a fair and open competition and interview by a panel consisting of Mr Speaker, three other Members of the House of Commons, and the Director General of HR & Change. The successful candidate was subsequently proposed to the Queen for approval.
Kamal has been Head of Front of House and VIP Relations at the Ministry of Justice since 2010. His start date will be confirmed soon.
Kamal El-Hajji, newly appointed Serjeant at Arms, said: “I am deeply honoured and privileged to be selected for this historic role, which dates from 1415. I look forward to taking up duty and following in the footsteps of previous illustrious Serjeants at Arms in serving Parliament.”
