MPs took part in a debate on compulsory jobs guarantee on Wednesday 11 February 2015 in the House of Commons. The second debate was on tax avoidance.

Debate on a compulsory jobs guarantee

The debate was opened by the Shadow Minister for Work and Pensions, Stephen Timms, on behalf of the Opposition. The Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, Iain Duncan Smith, responded on behalf of the Government.

The motion was negatived on division (Division No. 153, Ayes 215 votes, Noes 301 votes).

Debate on tax avoidance

The debate was opened by the Shadow Treasury Minister, Shabana Mahmood, on behalf of the Opposition. The Financial Secretary to the Treasury, David Gauke, responded on behalf of the Government.

The motion was agreed, as amended, on division (Division No. 155, Ayes 289 votes, Noes 208 votes).

About Opposition day debates

Opposition days are days allocated in the House of Commons in each session for the discussion of subjects chosen by the Opposition.

Seventeen days are at the disposal of the Leader of the Opposition, the leader of the largest opposition party, to decide which matters are debated. Three days are usually divided between the other opposition parties.
 
The Opposition generally use them to raise questions of policy and administration. Frequently, two separate subjects are debated on an opposition day.
