School reforms: Lords general debate
30 January 2015
Members of the Lords, including a former Education Secretary and a former headteacher, debated the progress of the government's school reforms on Thursday 29 January.
The debate included a wide range of views on the success of current education reforms, and the education system more widely. Among the issues discussed were:
- changes to the curriculum
- examination reforms
- the academy programme
- free schools
- technology and digital learning
- barriers to educational achievement
- SEN teaching reforms and the need to improve professional development
- current standards of careers education
- spending on school buildings
- the current inspection framework.
Responding for the government, Baroness Garden of Frognal (Liberal Democrat), said that, 'by creating a system which gives schools the freedom to innovate while also holding them to a higher level of accountability, we are giving our children and young people an educational foundation enabling them to fulfil their potential and succeed in life.'
