Members of the Lords, including a former Education Secretary and a former headteacher, debated the progress of the government's school reforms on Thursday 29 January.

The debate included a wide range of views on the success of current education reforms, and the education system more widely. Among the issues discussed were:

  • changes to the curriculum
  • examination reforms
  • the academy programme
  • free schools
  • technology and digital learning
  • barriers to educational achievement
  • SEN teaching reforms and the need to improve professional development
  • current standards of careers education
  • spending on school buildings
  • the current inspection framework.

Responding for the government, Baroness Garden of Frognal (Liberal Democrat), said that, 'by creating a system which gives schools the freedom to innovate while also holding them to a higher level of accountability, we are giving our children and young people an educational foundation enabling them to fulfil their potential and succeed in life.'
