Members of the Lords, including several former councillors and business leaders, debated the case for improving investment in and planning for the UK's national infrastructure on Thursday 22 January.

This was a general debate, which usually take place on a Thursday in the Lords chamber. During debates, members are able to put their experience to good use, discussing current issues and drawing the government's attention to concerns.

Former Transport Secretary and current shadow Treasury spokesperson, Lord Adonis (Labour), requested the debate. Other members who took part included:

  • Lord Bhattacharyya (Labour), professor of manufacturing at Warwick University
  • Baroness O'Cathain (Conservative), former non-executive director of British Airways and Tesco Plc
  • Lord Teverson (Liberal Democrat), former councillor and chair of the Rural Coalition.

Commercial Secretary to the Treasury, Lord Deighton (Conservative), responded on behalf of the government.
