Members of the Lords, including a member of the General Medical Council and a council member of European Parliamentarians for Africa, debated the lessons the government has learnt from the recent Ebola outbreak in West Africa, on Thursday 8 January.

Members identified a number of areas they felt could be addressed following the recent Ebola outbreak, primarily the inadequate health systems in Africa, and poor working conditions for medical staff.

Peers spoke about the importance of vaccines in fighting disease, but highlighted they take a long time to develop, and suggested governments should invest in vaccine development to help drive them forward. They also asked if too many of the doctors and nurses who have been trained in Africa leave to work in other countries, and discussed how they could be encouraged to stay.
