On Wednesday 15 July Professor Brian Cox will officially open Parliament’s brand new Education Centre in the presence of Speaker of the House of Commons, The Rt Hon John Bercow and the Lord Speaker, The Rt Hon Baroness D’Souza.

A special opening event attended by invited guests will celebrate the completion of the new Centre, which will double the number of school children able to visit Parliament each year.

The new Centre combines state-of-the-art technology with an environmentally sustainable building to offer schools a new world class facility in which to learn about Parliament, democracy and politics. In the last seven years the Parliamentary Education Service has enabled 300,000 visitors to come to Parliament, from over 4000 schools. The new Education Centre will allow one million school children to visit Parliament over the next decade.

Background

Parliament’s award-winning Education Service works with schools and Members of both Houses of Parliament to provide free support to young people in developing their understanding of democracy and Parliament. Services are designed to support the political literacy and citizenship education requirements of the national curricula and include visits to Parliament, outreach workshops, and educational resources for students and teachers.

Booking for school groups wishing to visit the Education Centre for the Spring term opens on 24 September from 8.30am. Schools should call 020 7219 4496. Additional information is available at:
