Members of the Lords, including a former ambassador to the UN and the EU and the president of UNICEF UK, debated the UK's role in addressing the global challenges posed by terrorism, conflict, climate change and mass migration, on Thursday 2 July.

Members highlighted the shift of global power from nation states and international institutions, and the changing global challenges. Some argued that UK foreign and defence policy are rooted in the past and failing to address the emerging new world.

Government whip the Earl of Courtown (Conservative) responded on behalf of the government saying that it was tackling the new global challenges with a long-term approach combining military and diplomatic resources as well as aid.
