Lords debates human rights

Members of the Lords, including a former Justice of the Supreme Court and the president of the Human Rights Lawyers' Association, debated the challenges facing the culture of human rights and civil liberties in the UK, on Thursday 2 July.

This was a general debate. They usually take place on a Thursday in the Lords chamber. During debates, members are able to put their experience to good use, discussing current issues and drawing the government's attention to concerns.
The debate was proposed by Lord Wallace of Tankerness (Liberal Democrat). Speakers included:
- Lord Brown of Eaton-under-Heywood (Crossbench), former Justice of the Supreme Court
- Lord Beecham (Labour), solicitor and vice president of the Community Foundation, Newcastle upon Tyne
- Lord Cormack (Conservative), former MP
- Lord Lester of Herne Hill (Liberal Democrat), governor of the British Institute for Human Rights and president of the Human Rights Lawyers' Association.
Lord Faulks (Conservative) responded on behalf of the government.
