Members of the Lords debated proposed reforms to the state and private pension systems, on Thursday 18 June.

The debate centred on changes made to the pensions system in the UK under the last government, and considered some of the challenges to come in the future. The work of the Pensions Commission was welcomed, and members spoke of the need to maintain a cross-party consensus on pensions.

Several members highlighted the complexity of the current state pension, and called for more to be done to simplify the system to allow individuals to plan for their retirement. The introduction of auto-enrolment, the impact of an ageing population and the need to help people stay in the labour market for longer were also discussed.
