Lords debates civil society

Members of the House of Lords including the president of the Community Foundation Network, the president of Linking Environment and Farming (LEAF) and a trustee of the Human Trafficking Foundation, discussed the role that civil society plays, in light of the light of the pastoral letter from the Church of England’s House of Bishops ‘Who is my neighbour?‘, on Thursday 11 June.
The focus of the debate was on modern society. Members identified a number of trends in society and political life of concern, including the decline in the levels of voting, increased apathy about politics, less engagement with community life, and growing levels of loneliness and isolation.
Peers talked about ways that the role of the neighbourhood could be strengthened in society, highlighting the success of the National Citizen Service and the Community Organisers programme. They also spoke about the role of charities, and whether they could be encouraged to make more social investments.
