The Queen has been pleased to approve that Mr David Natzler be appointed Under Clerk of the Parliaments (Clerk of the House of Commons) in succession to Lord Lisvane KCB (formerly Sir Robert Rogers KCB) who retired in August 2014.

David Lionel Natzler is, at present, Acting Clerk of the House. He has held this position since October 2014.

The role

The role has been revised following the report of the House of Commons Governance Committee published on 16 December 2014 which was endorsed by the House on 22 January 2015.

The Clerk of the House of Commons is appointed by the Crown as the chief adviser to the House on matters of parliamentary practice and procedure, privilege and broader constitutional issues. He is also Head of the House of Commons Service.

David Natzler said:

I am delighted, and very proud to have been asked to be the Clerk of the House of Commons and Head of the House of Commons Service.

The 2015 Parliament will offer many challenges which I am confident that the House Service will meet with energy, comprising as it does so many talented and committed people.
