Impact of pornography: Lords general debate
5 November 2015 (updated on 5 November 2015)
Members of the Lords debated the impact of pornography on society on Thursday 5 November.
This was a balloted debate. They usually take place on a Thursday in the Lords chamber. During debates, members are able to put their experience to good use, discussing current issues and drawing the government's attention to concerns.
The debate was proposed by the Lord Bishop of Chester. Speaking ahead of the debate he said: 'In recent years there has been much comment upon the widespread availability of pornography in our society, especially through the internet, and upon the impact which this is claimed to have... I hope that this debate will enable members of the House of Lords to reflect upon the issues, and to help the government to determine what can be done to address them.'
Other speakers included:
- Lord Giddens (Labour), former professor of sociology
- Lord Farmer (Conservative), school governor
- Baroness Howe of Idlicote (Crossbench), president of the National Governors' Association.
Parliamentary under-secretary at the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, Baroness Shields (Conservative), responded on behalf of the government.
