Lords debates trade unions

Members of the Lords, including a former general secretary of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) and a former trade union envoy for the Conservative Party, debated the role of trade unions in a democracy and their contribution to the general economic wellbeing of the nation, on Thursday 19 November.
This was a general debate. They usually take place on a Thursday in the Lords chamber. During debates, members are able to put their experience to good use, discussing current issues and drawing the government's attention to concerns.
The debate was proposed by Lord Foulkes of Cumnock (Labour).
Speakers included:
- Lord Balfe (Conservative), former trade union envoy for the Conservative Party
- Lord Monks (Labour), former general secretary of the Trades Union Congress (TUC)
- Lord Stoneham of Droxford (Liberal Democrat), Liberal Democrat Lords principal spokesperson for business, innovation and skills
Baroness Neville-Rolfe (Conservative), parliamentary under-secretary for the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills, responded on behalf of the government.
Baroness Burt of Solihull (Liberal Democrat), gave her maiden speech.
