Members of the Lords, including a number of university professors and a former secretary of state for education, debated the protection of freedom of speech in universities, on Thursday 26 November.

This was a general debate. They usually take place on a Thursday in the Lords chamber. During debates, members are able to put their experience to good use, discussing current issues and drawing the government's attention to concerns.

The debate was tabled by Baroness Deech (Crossbench), a former principal of St Anne’s College, Oxford.

Speakers included:

  • Lord Bew (Crossbench), professor of Irish Politics at Queen's University Belfast
  • Baroness Garden of Frognal (Liberal Democrat), former vice-chairman of the Oxford University Society
  • Lord Judd (Labour), emeritus governor of the London School of Economics and Political Science
  • Lord Patten (Conservative), former secretary of state for education

Baroness Evans of Bowes Park (Conservative) responded on behalf of the government.

Lord O'Shaughnessy (Conservative) gave his maiden speech.
