Education and employment: Lords general debate
23 October 2015
Members of the Lords, including the vice president of the British Dyslexia Association and a director of the Mayor's Fund for London, debated the case for creating the right education and employment opportunities in the UK, on Thursday 22 October.
Many members spoke about the significant negative impact of youth unemployment, and the importance of both education and employment in improving life chances. The debate also covered the role of apprenticeships, and the valuable work of the further education and adult skills sector.
Baroness Evans of Bowes Park (Conservative), responded on behalf of the government, and stressed its commitment to supporting young unemployed people through work experience and training programmes, and providing high-quality careers advice.
The debate was proposed by Baroness Stedman-Scott (Conservative), a member of the Lords Social Mobility Committee. Speakers included:
- Lord Addington (Liberal Democrat), vice president of the British Dyslexia Association
- Lord MacKenzie of Luton (Labour), shadow spokesperson for Work and Pensions
- Lord Fink (Conservative), trustee of educational charity Ark and director of the Mayor's Fund for London.
This was a general debate. They usually take place on a Thursday in the Lords chamber. During debates, members are able to put their experience to good use, discussing current issues and drawing the government's attention to concerns.
