Lord Speaker visits Cornwall

The Lord Speaker, Baroness D’Souza, gave a free public talk on representation and democracy at County Hall in Truro on Friday 16 October. The event was part of a two day visit to Cornwall.
How can we widen participation in our democratic institutions?
Baroness D'Souza delivered the keynote speech, focusing on women and democracy and the role of the House of Lords. She was joined by others involved in democracy at a more local level to take a look at how Cornwall’s under-represented groups can have a stronger voice. The event concluded with an open Q & A session with the panel.
During her two day visit to Cornwall, Baroness D'Souza also met schoolchildren, local business leaders and representatives of Cornwall Council, speaking to them about the work of the House, the role of the Lord Speaker and how they can all become more engaged with the political process.
Business and Parliament
On Thursday 15 October, Baroness D'Souza visited the Truro Chamber of Commerce to give an introduction to the role of the Lord Speaker and speak about the relationship between business and Parliament.
Peers in Schools
Baroness D'Souza visited the Richard Lander School in Truro on Friday 16 June, as part of her Peers in Schools programme. She spoke to staff and students at the school about her role as Lord Speaker, and the work of the House of Lords, to encourage the students to take an interest in politics and the democratic process.
