Criminal Justice System: Lords general debate
29 October 2015 (updated on 29 October 2015)
Members of the Lords, including the chief executive of Turning Point and the author of a recent review on prison conditions and the rehabilitation of prisoners, debated the case for addressing the problems of young people before they enter the criminal justice system, on Thursday 29 October.
This was a general debate. They usually take place on a Thursday in the Lords chamber. During debates, members are able to put their experience to good use, discussing current issues and drawing the government's attention to concerns.
The debate was proposed by Lord Harris of Haringey (Labour), author of The Harris Review: Changing Prisons, Saving Lives, published in July 2015. Speakers included:
- Lord Adebowale (Crosssbench), chief executive of Turning Point
- Lord Carlile of Berriew (Liberal Democrat), practising barrister
- Lord Dholakia (Liberal Democrat), former head of administration of justice at the Commission for Racial Equality.
Justice minister, Lord Faulks (Conservative), responded on behalf of the government.
