Members of the Lords, including a former minister of state for the Treasury and the acting chair of the Committee on Standards in Public Life, debated the British economy beyond austerity, on Thursday 10 September.

The debate focused on the question of how the UK can move from a period of austerity into a period of productivity. Members looked at areas including local government, the public sector, and the transformative effects of technology. They also looked at the changing nature of employment in the digital world, highlighting that many people are now employed ‘transactionally’ either part-time or over the internet, and asked how skills shortages could be addressed.

Peers also asked how international trade could be strengthened and investment in the UK encouraged.
