Lords examines Northern Ireland Stormont Agreement Bill

The Northern Ireland (Stormont Agreement and Implementation Plan) Bill had its third reading, a final chance to 'tidy up' the bill and make changes, in the House of Lords on Thursday 28 April.

The bill now awaits Royal Assent and will then become an Act of Parliament (law).

Members discussed subjects relating to the procedures for assembly members, the terminology of Irish place names and the appearance of 'victims and survivors' before the Independent Reporting Commission.

Members of the Lords, including a former First Minister of Northern Ireland, a two-time Lord Mayor of Belfast and a Professor of Irish Politics discussed the key principles and purpose of the Northern Ireland (Stormont Agreement and Implementation Plan) Bill during its second reading on Tuesday 12 April.

Northern Ireland (Stormont Agreement and Implementation Plan) Bill summary:

The bill will define the laws around the Independent Reporting Commission and make the following provisions in pursuance of the agreement made on 17 November 2015 called A Fresh Start: The Stormont Agreement and Implementation Plan:

  • extend the period for the appointment of Northern Ireland Ministers
  • modify the pledge made by Northern Ireland Ministers on taking office
  • provide for persons becoming Members of the Northern Ireland Assembly to give an undertaking
  • make provision about the draft budget of the Northern Ireland Executive
