The Lord Speaker, Baroness D’Souza, welcomed representatives from the charity Chwarae Teg to the House of Lords on Tuesday 12 July to discuss women in public life.

Among peers the group met were Baroness Royall of Blaisdon, former Leader of the House; and Baroness Deech, a Crossbench peer who sits on the Equality Act 2010 and Disability Committee.

The visit followed Baroness D'Souza's parliamentary outreach visit to Cardiff in May, where she visited a comprehensive school and met representatives of community groups working to help refugees and asylum seekers, and on gender equality including Chwarae Teg.

Speaking ahead of the event, the Lord Speaker said:

“The role of women in public life is an issue I have highlighted throughout my time as Lord Speaker.  The House of Lords has been successful in promoting the idea of women in high profile positions (my predecessor also having been a woman), but there is much work to be done both in politics, and in public life more generally. I welcome and celebrate Chwarae Teg’s work, and I look forward  to hearing more about their achievements in this important area.”
