Members of the Lords, including a founder of the Big Issue and the honorary president of the Child Poverty Action Group, debated the case for tackling the causes of poverty in the UK, in the House of Lords on Thursday 14 July.

This was a general debate. They normally take place on a Thursday in the chamber. During debates, members are able to put their experience to good use, discussing current issues and drawing the government's attention to concerns.

The debate was proposed by Lord Bird (Crossbench), director of the Big Issue Group Limited.

Members taking part included:

Baroness Sharp of Guildford (Liberal Democrat) made her valedictory speech, the last speech before she retires from the House of Lords.

Lord Freud (Conservative), minister for welfare reform, responded on behalf of the government.
