Members of the Lords, including barristers and former supreme court justices and heads of the judiciary, debated the resourcing and staffing of the courts in supporting the rule of law, on Thursday 14 July.

This was a general debate. They normally take place on a Thursday in the chamber. During debates, members are able to put their experience to good use, discussing current issues and drawing the government's attention to concerns.

The debate was proposed by Lord Woolf (Crossbench), former Law Lord and Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales.

Other members taking part included:

Lord Saville of Newdigate (Crossbench), former Law Lord, Supreme Court Justice and chair of the Bloody Sunday Inquiry, made his maiden speech.

Lord Faulks QC (Conservative), barrister and Justice Minister, responded on behalf of the government.
