Speaker granted Freedom of the City

On Monday 4th July 2016, the Speaker of the House of Commons, Rt Hon John Bercow MP, received the Freedom of the City of London, at a ceremony at the Guildhall. The Freedom was granted to the Speaker in “recognition of his strenuous efforts to make Parliament and the democratic process more transparent and accessible to the public.”
The Speaker said that he was “delighted” to have received the award. “I am honoured to have been granted the Freedom of the City of London, and consider it a huge privilege, not just for me, but also for the office of Speaker.”
