Wales Bill: Commons stages

Both the House of Commons and the House of Lords have agreed the text of the Wales Bill. The Bill received Royal Assent on 31 January 2017 becoming an Act of Parliament (law).

The Wales Bill 2016-17

Summary of the Bill

This Bill aims to:

  • amend the Government of Wales Act 2000,
  • and make provision about the functions of the Welsh Ministers; and for connected purposes.

Wales Bill: previous Commons stages

Royal Assent

The Wales Bill received Royal Assent on 31 January 2017, becoming an Act of Parliament (law).

Consideration of Lords amendments

The Commons agreed with the Lords amendments and the Wales Bill received Royal Assent on 31 January 2017.

Report stage and Third Reading

Both the Report stage and Third Reading of the Bill took place on Monday 12 September.

Committee stage

MPs considered the Wales Bill in a Committee of the whole House over two days in the House of Commons on Tuesday 5 and Monday 11 July 2016.

Second Reading

MPs debated the Second Reading of the Wales Bill on Tuesday 14 June 2016.

The Wales Bill passed Second Reading without a division.

The Bill was presented to Parliament on 7 June 2016. This is known as First Reading and there was no debate on the Bill at this stage.
