The Lord Speaker, Baroness D’Souza, welcomed representatives from the Hull City of Sanctuary group to the House of Lords on Monday 14 March, for a round-table discussion on immigration issues, and to talk about how they can all become more engaged with the work of the House and the political process.

The visit followed Baroness D'Souza's parliamentary outreach visit to Hull in January, where she met representatives of Hull City of Sanctuary, the local branch of a network of groups that works to help people settle in the UK, particularly refugees and asylum seekers.

The visitors also met Lord Haskel, Lord Teverson and Lord Dholakia.

Speaking ahead of the event, the Lord Speaker said:

‘With the Immigration Bill currently going through the House, it is particularly timely that I will be meeting people who work with refugees, asylum seekers and others who wish to build a new and better life in the UK. As well as sharing with them the work the House of Lords is doing on the Bill, I will be very interested to hear more of their experiences in working with this vulnerable group of people.’
