Three debates took place in the House of Lords on Thursday 26 May. The debates covered, the capacity of schools to deal with commonly occurring special educational needs and disabilities; young people being registered to vote in the EU referendum; and the recommendations of the NHS England Five Year Forward Review for Mental Health. 

During debates members are able to put their experience to good use, discussing current issues and drawing the government's attention to concerns.

Schools and special educational needs and disabilities

This debate covered the case for improved individual school capacity to deal with commonly occurring special educational needs and disabilities, in the light of the increasing number of academies and free schools.

The debate was proposed by Lord Addington (Liberal Democrat), President of the British Dyslexia Association.

Registering young people to vote

The debate covered plans to ensure that every eligible young voter is registered to vote ahead of the 7 June deadline to register to vote in the European Union referendum.

The debate was proposed by Lord Roberts of Llandudno (Liberal Democrat), President of Bite the Ballot.

Five Year Forward Review for Mental Health

The debate covered the recommendations of the NHS England Five Year Forward Review for Mental Health and the case for ensuring equal access to mental and physical healthcare.

This debate was proposed by Baroness Brinton (Liberal Democrat), member of the Equality Act 2010 and Disability Committee (2015-2016).
